On the 7th of February 2019, The Deep Water Initiative team hosted a Religion & Ecology Film screening and discussion at the California Institute of Integral Studies for a cohort of college students enrolled in a study abroad program at the School for International Training. The students are enrolled in a semester long program that will take them to four countries called the, “IHP: Climate Change - The Politics of Food, Water, and Energy”. The students will travel from the US to Vietnam, Morocco, and Bolivia to witness the causes and social impacts of climate change and examine possibilities for local and global environmental justice.

Anote's Ark

The screening of Anote’s Ark is a story that follows the former president of the Kiribat Islands in his attempt to raise international support for the plight of his people whose islands are under severe threat from climate change. The screening was held at the end of the first section of the students program before their departure for Vietnam from San Francisco.

The screening allowed the students the opportunity to critically apply some of their learning in thinking about the challenges that face the lives and cultures of peoples from island nations that form part of underdeveloped regions of the world.

Commenti

The Deep Water Initiative is inspired by the ecological importance of water as an all-pervasive element that sustains life on this planet.  The metaphysical importance of water as both a cleanser and regenerator has been upheld by many cultures throughout the world, and is celebrated within the creation myths of different religious and spiritual traditions.  The Deep Water Initiative has been particularly influenced by the significance of water as demonstrated within the Five Books of Moses.
